Here at LNER, we're shaping the future of rail on one of the UK's most iconic routes. We're investing in cutting-edge technology, sustainability, and most importantly our people, to deliver outstanding experiences for our customers. There has never been a more exciting time to grow your career with LNER!

At LNER, data is more than just information, it's a strategic asset that powers better decisions, drives business growth, and helps us deliver an outstanding experience for our customers. We're building a data-driven culture where data is treated as a product: trusted, accessible, reusable, and governed to the highest standards.

So, what exactly does our Senior Data Engineer do?

As a technical expert within our Data Services team, you'll design and build robust data pipelines that transform raw data into high-quality, business-ready data assets. Working across a wide range of business functions, you'll collaborate with data owners, drive adoption of data products, and ensure our data platform remains scalable, cost-effective, and aligned with governance standards.

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled technical data professional with a proven track record of delivering data pipelines and curating quality data assets. You'll bring hands-on experience with AWS data lake technologies, including S3, Glue and Lake Formation, alongside expertise in tools such as JIRA, GitHub and Terraform. You'll also champion engineering best practices, mentor colleagues, and contribute to high-profile projects that make a measurable impact on LNER's performance, revenue, and ways of working.

You will also:

  • Lead the discovery, design, development and deployment of robust, scalable data pipelines and high-quality data assets that support strategic and operational business needs.
  • Collaborate with data owners, suppliers and governance stakeholders to ensure data solutions are secure, compliant and aligned to business requirements.
  • Support the prioritisation and delivery of the Data Sourcing Roadmap, providing technical expertise and effort estimates to inform planning and decision-making.
  • Monitor, investigate and resolve data pipeline and data quality issues, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and long-term optimisation.
  • Drive the adoption and re-use of data assets across the business, helping to unlock efficiencies, reduce costs and create value through data-driven decision making.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring and support to Data Engineers and the wider data community, championing engineering standards, best practices and continuous learning.
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders across LNER and the wider rail industry, fostering innovation and enabling Data Engineering, Analytics, Data Science and AI use cases through expert advice and collaboration.
  • Act as a technical subject matter expert for LNER's Data Lake and wider data platform, providing expert guidance and promoting best practice data engineering and target architecture principles.

  • Proven experience as a Data Engineer, with a track record of designing, building and supporting scalable, reliable data pipelines and high-quality data assets.

  • Knowledge of data governance, metadata management and data lineage principles and tools.
  • Experience working with a range of analytics and business intelligence tools, with strong SQL skills and an understanding of data science, reporting and visualisation platforms.
  • Strong attention to detail, with experience testing, validating and reviewing data solutions to ensure quality and reliability.
  • Excellent documentation skills, with the ability to create clear technical documentation and requirements within tools such as Confluence and JIRA.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, able to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

At LNER, safety is our top priority. If your application is successful and you're new to the business, we'll carry out a basic DBS check as part of our pre-employment process. This is only takes place once a conditional job offer has been made.

The DBS check looks for any unspent convictions and conditional cautions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974. If there's evidence of an unspent conviction or a conditional caution, the details of these will be reviewed internally by a cross functional panel on a case-by-case basis before a final offer of employment is confirmed. Please note that in some cases, this may result in an offer being withdrawn.

Further information on how we collect and use this data is available on our privacy notice.

Medical screening

We're a safety conscious business, so when joining LNER in any role you'll need to pass a medical screening and a drugs and alcohol test before we can confirm an unconditional job offer. For safety-critical roles, a safety-critical medical will also be required.

Our Talent Team will be on hand to guide you through the process and will send you a medical questionnaire by email. Once complete, this will go directly to our in-house Health and Wellbeing team who will contact you to arrange a convenient location, date and time for your medical appointment. We currently have clinics in Kings Cross, Doncaster, Newcastle and Edinburgh. The sooner we can do it, the better, so please try to be flexible with your availability. Once your medical is approved, we'll finalise any last details and look forward to you joining the team!
