Why LNER?

We go beyond. For everyone. Our vision is to be the most loved, progressive and responsible way to travel for generations to come. Now we're looking for the people who can deliver this, every day.

Since we took over on the East Coast mainline, we've been changing the face of rail travel. Our new Azuma train has brought faster journey times, more space and greater reliability. Our exciting plans to embrace new ideas, experiences, backgrounds and ambitions make this the ideal time to join.

Bringing passion. Being bold. Always caring. Owning it. They're the values that make us LNER.

Are you on board?

As a Senior Data Engineer, you'll lead the design and delivery of robust, high-performing data pipelines that support everything from operational decisions to strategic insights. You'll own the full lifecycle of data assets and products within our AWS-based architecture, shaping how data is sourced, governed, and used across the organisation.

Working at the heart of LNER's Data & BI team, you'll act as a technical expert and role model for engineering best practices, supporting colleagues across analytics, data science, and reporting. Your expertise will help us unlock new value from our data, drive efficiencies, and enable smarter ways of working.

Within this role you'll also be involved in;

  • Build, deploy and manage scalable, reliable data pipelines using AWS technologies including S3, Glue, Lambda, and Redshift.
  • Lead the development of curated data assets and data products for use across the business, ensuring they're accessible, governed, and reusable.
  • Champion and embed data engineering best practices, providing mentoring and support to peers and junior engineers.
  • Collaborate with data owners, InfoSec, and analysts to ensure new data solutions are well-designed and secure.
  • Act as a go-to expert for all things data, contributing to strategic projects that shape the future of our services.
  • Promote a data-driven culture across the organisation and wider rail industry.

What you'll need:

Essential:

  • 5+ years' experience building data pipelines and deploying high-quality, scalable data solutions in a CI/CD environment.
  • Proven expertise working in a modern AWS-cloud data architecture (S3, Glue, Lambda, Lake Formation) to deliver data assets and products.
  • Experience with VS-Code, Athena, Redshift, Terraform and GitHub.
  • Familiarity with BI and analytics platforms such as Tableau, Quicksight, Alteryx or Sagemaker.
  • A proactive problem-solver and strong communicator, able to influence stakeholders and lead technical conversations.
  • Passion for innovation, with an eye for optimising data use across complex organisations.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with real-time streaming tools (AWS Kinesis/Firehose).
  • Previous exposure to rail, travel, or leisure industries.
  • Understanding of data governance and lineage tools.

Please note: We are looking to interview for this role mid-end June 2025.

What you'll get:

  • Free travel on LNER + 75% off other companies' tickets (for you & dependents)
  • Discounted international train tickets (after one year's service)
  • 50% discount on LNER tickets for friends & family
  • Generous pension scheme
  • Annual cycle to work schemes
  • Discount, savings and cashback scheme from top retailers
  • Health & wellbeing schemes and discounts
  • Host of training opportunities to help further your career
  • Rewards & awards to recognise when you shine
