As a key member of our digital team, you'll lead the development of products that drive business goals, enhance customer experience, and support our colleagues. Collaborating with cross-functional teams and stakeholders, you'll shape product strategies, deliver roadmaps, and champion continuous improvement to ensure our digital solutions evolve with the needs of the business and industry.
This role reports into a Digital Service Lead and will have a primary area of focus or product type, which may flex in response to the evolving needs of the wider service.
Within this role you'll be involved in;
- Product Strategy & Vision: Collaborate closely with business owners to consider how products work across the digital service ecosystem (e.g. shared components, platforms etc) to define a product vision, shape a strategy and prioritise initiatives. Develop a clear roadmap aligned with the Service goals and ecosystem.
- Product Lifecycle Management: Lead products from ideation through development, launch, and continuous improvement. Ensure that products work optimally within the full digital service to meet service goals, with optimal use of shared platforms, components, resource and data.
- User-Centric & Data-Driven: Champion user-centered design and use data, analytics, and user feedback to inform decisions, track performance, and drive enhancements.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Act as a bridge between digital service teams, business stakeholders, suppliers, IT, marketing, and customer support to ensure seamless development and delivery.
- Market & Industry Insight: Monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitor activity to identify opportunities for innovation, stay ahead of trends and build capabilities
- Agile Delivery: Manage backlogs, write user stories, and oversee delivery through appropriate methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, etc.). Adapt quickly to change and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Communicate product status, priorities, and risks clearly and regularly. Represent LNER on industry working groups.
- Financial & Commercial Management: Own and manage product and change budgets, ensuring value-driven decisions, timely delivery, and alignment with financial goals.
- Supplier Management: Oversee third-party suppliers and contracts to ensure quality, cost-effectiveness, and adherence to SLAs.
- Team Leadership: Line-manage relevant team members including Associate Product Managers, Product Optimisation Managers, and Apprentices.
- Personal Development & Flexibility: Maintain up-to-date skills and be ready to support out-of-hours releases or cover other roles as needed to ensure service continuity.
What you'll need:
We're looking for an experienced Digital Product Manager with a passion for user-centered design, data-driven decision-making, and continuous innovation. You'll bring a solid blend of strategic thinking, delivery focus, and strong stakeholder engagement skills.
Key Skills & Experience:
- Product Expertise: Demonstratable experience in digital product management, with strong knowledge of end-to-end product lifecycles and delivery methodologies (Agile, Scrum, Waterfall).
- User-Centric & Data-Led: Strong understanding of UX/UI principles and the ability to translate user insights and performance metrics (e.g. OKRs, KPIs, CSAT) into impactful product decisions.
- Collaboration & Communication: Excellent communicator with the ability to influence, negotiate, and build trusted relationships across technical and non-technical teams, suppliers, and stakeholders.
- Creative & Commercial Mindset: Able to identify opportunities for differentiation, innovation, and cost-effective delivery, balancing commercial value, user benefit, and risk.
- Analytical & Organised: Strong problem-solving skills with a sharp eye for detail. Capable of managing competing priorities, multiple initiatives, and making informed decisions under pressure.
- Industry Awareness: A good understanding of the rail industry's operational and stakeholder landscape is desirable but not essential, along with curiosity and willingness to learn more.
- Technical Confidence: Comfortable using product management tools (Jira, Trello, Confluence, Miro) and with a working knowledge of web and app development principles.
- Agile, Scrum, or Product Management certifications (desirable but not essential).
