Why LNER?
We go beyond. For everyone. Our vision is to be the most loved, progressive and responsible way to travel for generations to come. Now we're looking for the people who can deliver this, every day.
Since we took over on the East Coast mainline, we've been changing the face of rail travel.
Bringing passion. Being bold. Always caring. Owning it. They're the values that make us LNER.
Are you on board?
Reporting to the Occupational Health and Wellbeing Manager, you will be an integral part of a supportive occupational health team, helping to deliver a high-quality, responsive service to our people. You will carry out on-employment, periodic and interim medicals, including health surveillance and testing, ensuring all activity meets industry standards and best practice.
Using your attention to detail and commitment to excellent customer service, you will provide clear, accurate information and results to clinicians, supporting informed decisions on fitness for work.
Working collaboratively with colleagues and confidently on your own initiative when required, you will uphold the highest standards of confidentiality, role-model our values, and contribute to identifying health risks and developing practical, forward-thinking solutions that support both individual wellbeing and organisational success.
Within this role you'll also be involved in;
- Deliver timely, high-quality occupational health assessments (face-to-face and by telephone) to support fitness for work decisions, including medicals, periodic reviews, health surveillance, and drugs & alcohol screening.
- Provide clear, professional advice and guidance to employees and line managers, interpreting occupational health policies and procedures and signposting appropriately when matters fall outside your remit.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across the Health and Wellbeing, clinical and People teams to ensure the smooth and effective running of occupational health services.
- Support and contribute to occupational health and wellbeing initiatives, including leading on agreed wellbeing topics and working with Wellbeing Champions in line with the wellbeing strategy.
- Coach and support line managers on occupational health processes, helping them access the right information and advice through the most appropriate channels.
- Maintain accurate, confidential records and ensure all routine processes, electronic documentation and reporting meet required standards, timescales and service level agreements.
- Collate and analyse data for reporting to clinicians and the organisation, identifying trends and supporting audits and continuous improvement.
- Support wider people initiatives, including long-term sickness management, incapacity and ill-health retirements, and other medical or wellbeing-related requirements.
- Ensure equipment is maintained, calibrated and recorded in line with policy, and contribute to the training and ongoing competence of the Incident Care Team.
This role is primarily based at Edinburgh, with occasional travel required to other clinics to provide cover when needed.
What we're looking for:
- You hold a recognised Occupational Health Technician qualification, with training in audiometry, spirometry, ECG and chain-of-custody drug and alcohol testing.
- You are confident in carrying out a wide range of medical tests, including blood pressure and vision screening, in line with professional standards.
- You have experience working in a fast-paced occupational health environment, balancing high-volume clinics with service development, health surveillance planning, urgent queries, outbreak response and participation in clinical audits.
- You are comfortable managing sensitive and sometimes challenging situations, providing appropriate assessment, support and referral where work restrictions or changes may be required.
- You bring excellent interpersonal and communication skills, enabling you to work effectively with employees, clinicians and multidisciplinary teams.
- You are confident using Microsoft Office and electronic systems to accurately record, store and retrieve confidential information.
- You have a strong understanding of the occupational health and wellbeing agenda, including the application of health and safety legislation, and you thrive in regulated, safety-critical environments (experience in rail is advantageous).
- You are proactive, adaptable and committed to your ongoing personal and professional development, with the ability to respond positively to change and contribute new ideas.
What you'll get:
- Free travel on LNER + 75% off other companies' tickets (for you & dependents)
- Discounted international train tickets (after one year's service)
- 50% discount on LNER tickets for friends & family
- Generous pension scheme
- Annual cycle to work schemes
- Discount, savings and cashback scheme from top retailers
- Health & wellbeing schemes and discounts
- Host of training opportunities to help further your career
- Rewards & awards to recognise when you shine

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check
If you are successful in your application and are new to the business, we will undertake a basic DBS check as part of our pre-employment checks. This only happens once we have conditionally offered you the job. Here we check for any unspent convictions and conditional cautions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974. If there is evidence of an unspent conviction or conditional caution, the details of these are reviewed internally by a cross functional panel on a case by case basis before a final offer of employment is issued. This however may result in any offer being withdrawn. Further information on how we collect and use this data is available on our privacy notice.
Medical screening
We're a safety conscious business so for all roles you'll need to pass a medical screening and a drugs and alcohol test before we send you an unconditional job offer. For our safety critical roles, you'll also need to have a safety critical medical. Our friendly, in-house Health and Wellbeing team will book a time and place to suit you. The sooner, the better, so please be flexible with your availability. Once your medical gets the thumbs up, we'll finalise any last details and look forward to you joining our team.
