As a Machine learning Engineer Intern, you'll play a vital role in making this possible. You'll collaborate closely with data scientists, engineers and product managers, helping to unlock the full potential of our data by building, preparing, and maintaining the robust data pipelines that fuel our ML solutions.

Within this role you'll also be involved in;
Data Pipeline Architecture
- Supporting the Data Engineer on identifying and extracting data from various sources to ingest into our machine learning lab environment, including working with distributed systems.
- Developing and implementing flexible and scalable data pipelines with the Data Engineer.
Data Management
- Pioneering, implementing and maintaining ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) workflows.
- Supporting the development of LNER's approach to metadata management.
- Applying existing approaches for maintaining track of different dataset versions.
- Owning data dictionaries and documentation including leading on their creation.
Testing and Deployment Support
- Assist in building automated tests to validate data quality, pipeline integrity, and model input/output expectations.
- Work with MLOps Engineer to validate pipeline performance before deployment to production.
- Help monitor and troubleshoot data and model pipeline issues during staging and post-deployment.
- Learn and apply continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) practices relevant to machine learning pipelines.
What you'll need:
Essentials
- Demonstratable experience in data modelling, data warehousing and building data pipelines.
- Proficient knowledge of machine learning fundamentals, including key concepts such as supervised and unsupervised learning, model evaluation, and feature engineering.
- Experience or knowledge with SQL, Python, AWS, Big Query: capable of writing, tuning, troubleshooting code.
- Strong experience in data modelling and ETL development.
- Exposure to or understanding of deploying data or machine learning pipelines, including basic CI/CD practices.
- Experience or familiarity with writing basic unit or integration tests for code to ensure functionality and reliability.
Desirables
- Previous experience in building distributed systems for data extraction, ingestions and processing multiple resources.
- Proficient in Python or Spark desirable but not essential.
- Knowledge of Git version control and best practices for collaborative code management.
- Previous experience with working with data scientists strong plus but not essential.
- A keen interest or knowledge or the rail industry.
