The Railways Pension Scheme is the defined benefit (also known as "final salary") pension arrangement for rail industry employees or the Industry Wide Defined Contribution (IWDC) pension scheme.
The Railway Pension Scheme is a first-class occupational pension scheme. LNER pays 60% of the cost of providing the benefit and you pay 40% - to receive comparable benefits from a personal pension arrangement would cost you substantially more per month. You do of course have the option to opt out at the start of your employment or make additional voluntary tax-free contributions if you wish.
The Cycle to Work scheme is Government backed and gives you the opportunity to get a bike and accessories to travel to and from work. This year you can apply to secure a loan of up to £2,500 to spend.
You pay for the hire of the bike through the salary sacrifice scheme, spreading the cost over the year. You’ll make significant savings as your Cycle to Work payments will be taken before your tax and National Insurance deductions. It’s an amazing 32% if you’re on a lower rate tax code, or up to 42% if you’re in the higher band. You then hire the bike for the year and at the end of the hire term, you can either return the bike, pay a one off payment or enter into a cost-free extended hire term for 48 - 60 months.
Save money while driving a brand new car, with Car Benefit. Car Benefit is a great added benefit for those on a headline salary of £34,000 per annum or higher.
